Unraveling the Mystery: Federal Grants in Action

Bert Nuehring, CPA, Partner, and Eric Russell, CIA, CGAP, CGMS, MPA, Senior Manager, Crowe Horwath

Many many moons ago, the Federal Government began providing financial assistance to states, local governments, non-profits, and other types of organizations.  Throughout the time, the rules of the road have consistently changed and new programs have been implemented.  These changes over time create new and evolving risks.  During this 1.5 day training, we will discuss practical methods to addressing compliance risks, complete a number of hands-on activities that demonstrate how regulatory requirements may be implemented in practice, and develop strategies for risk mitigation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify recurring compliance issues and control deficiencies and methods to prevent and detect them.
  2. Discuss requirements for and methods to develop risk-based monitoring plans, including implementation of corrective action and follow-up.
  3. Identify and discuss best practices in preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse.
  4. Plan methods and strategies for responding to audit findings so as to reduce the risk of repeat findings.
